Chinese State's repression in Xinjiang: decolonizing history and deconstructing narratives
In recent years, the north-western region of Xinjiang has come under the spotlight due to the “serious human rights violation”, as also denounced in a recently released report by the United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights. Chinese authorities claim that the measures and policies are aimed to counter terrorism and religious extremism, but scholars and journalists have pointed out the Chinese state’s repression and violence against the non-Han population in the region. Beatrice Gallelli (IAI researcher) dialogues with James Millward (Georgetown University), a leading expert in China’s modern history and historical and contemporary Xinjiang, in order to dig deeper into what is going on in Xinjiang and support the dissemination of fact-based information on the issue.
