Il futuro dell'Onu e il ruolo dell'Italia ai tempi del Covid-19

12/06/2020, Webinar

This webinar dscussed the role of the United Nations (UN) and Italy’s diplomatic action within the UN in this challenging period of international relations characterized by the crisis of multilateralism and the Covid-19 emergency. In particular, the webinar, which is part of the IAI-ISPI joint project on Italy’s foreign policy, looked into the impact of the pandemic on the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What new instruments can the UN activate to minimize the effects of the pandemic and support national and global efforts to achieve sustainable development? How can global health cooperation be promoted on a regular basis? The meeting also addressed the future of multilateralism and the prospects of the UN reform with a special focus on the role of Italy. Can we realistically expect a reform of the UN that enhances its effectiveness and legitimacy? Can this goal be reached despite the persistent stalemate within the UN Security Council? What new mechanisms could be set up to strengthen the role of regional organizations? How can EU diplomacy help pursue this reform process?
