Women and Leadership in International Relations
The central role of women in decisional processes and their participation in the formulation and strategies of international policies has received more recognition in the past years. The Resolution 1325 on “Women, Peace and Security”, approved unanimously by the United Nations, was an important starting point for a greater participation of female civil society members to conflicts’ prevention and resolution. Women participation is now widely acknowledged and constantly increasing in the political sphere and the third sector, allowing women to bring their valuable contribution and perspective in a more inclusive environment. However, the most recent global crisis (the Covid-19 pandemics, the Ukrainian war and the scarcity of resources in developing countries to cite a few) are having the dramatic effect of increasing the gender gap globally and in countries at war in particular.
The course IAI offers on “Women and leadership in International relations” in collaboration with WIIS (Women in International Security) Italy, aims at enhancing women’s professional growth by giving its participants practical and theoretical tools and blending together social and gender studies. We also aim at going beyond stereotypical and culturally biased concepts and exploring the opportunities and the difficulties that women face in the international context, in order to be able to finally break the chain of transmission of gender inequality and embrace contemporary changes.
The course is open to people identifying themselves to any gender and has the objective to:
- give participants the necessary tools to understand and be able to explain current topics related to gender;
- provide participants with the knowledge and practices necessary to enhance the visibility and efficacy of their leadership;
- analyse specific case studies related to migration, climate change and food security, understand how these issues are tied to one another and the relative role that women assume in international relations, governmental organisations and NGOs;
- strengthen participants’ analytical skills through the integration of theoretical and analytical tools related to IR with the particular concepts and critical sensitivity of gender studies.
The course is aimed at students, recent graduates and civil and military professionals with a background in social sciences (political science, economics, law) with a specific interest in issues and dynamics related to gender. It will be taught in Italian (some modules might be presented in English) every day in the afternoon from November 28th to 30th 2022.
The course will take place in hybrid mode. It will be possible to participate to the course both online and in person. However, in presence lessons and activities will be guaranteed from a minimum of 8 participants on site. In case of failure to reach the minimum number of in presence participants, the course will be held entirely online.

Participants will receive tutoring and assistance for the realisation of laboratory activities and the formulation of papers.
