Global Monetary Order at the Critical Juncture: The Impact of Digitalisation and Geoeconomic fragmentation
The recent “weaponisation” of finance against Russia might intensify efforts to reduce the global dependence on Western-led currencies and payment infrastructure. Transformations in the international monetary system have historically been slow to materialise, but the growing politicisation of money and the process of financial digitalisation may prompt a shift towards a multipolar international monetary system.
The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), in the framework of its partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo, coordinated a task force of leading international experts to investigate the implications of the recent geopolitical tensions and economic dislocations on the Bretton Woods globalmonetary order. The results of this research effort are included in the book titled “Digitalisation and Geopolitics: Catalytic Forces in the (Future) International Monetary System”.
The publication will be presented and discussed at the seminar. The debate will also address opportunities and challenges of the ongoing developments in the international monetary system. A keynote speech by Michele Savini Zangrandi (Bank of Italy) will open the panel with contributing authors.
