In remembrance of Roberto Aliboni

It is with emotion and affection that the Istituto Affari Internazionali mourns the passing of professor and friend Roberto Aliboni, a long-time colleague of the Institute of which he was general manager and vice president, as well as director and founder of the Mediterranean and Middle East programme.

In his long and prolific career as a researcher and genuine promoter of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, Roberto played a leading role in conceiving and initiating the Mediterranean Study Commission (MeSCo) in 1994 - today EuroMeSCo - a network of experts and research institutes from all shores of the Mediterranean. In recent years, as a scientific adviser to the Institute, Roberto continued his passionate study of Mediterranean issues, particularly focussing on Libya and Syria, two countries to which he had long devoted attention.
Roberto will be remembered with esteem and affection for his knowledge and approachability not only in Italy and Europe, but throughout the Mediterranean, where his works remain a point of reference across generations committed to fostering dialogue and cooperation between the states and peoples of the region.
