5th Session of the Deterrence and Arms Control Conversation with William Alberque

The Egmont Institute, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) are organising a meeting on NATO's deterrence and arms control policies.

This meeting will discuss NATO’s nuclear deterrent, its history and future adaptation. NATO’s nuclear deterrent, as part of its overall deterrence posture, has evolved from the Cold War to the present day, sometimes through considered decision-making and sometimes through inertia. However, Russia’s disruption of the Euro-Atlantic security environment, especially in its ongoing war against Ukraine, as well as other changes in the security environment, have forced the Allies to relearn and rethink deterrence from scratch. This includes concepts such as Forward Defence, Integrated Deterrence and the reintroduction of permanent defence planning for NATO territory for the first time since 1989.
