China has increased its influence in the Eastern Mediterranean over the past decade. It has taken advantage of the region’s vast financial needs, interest in joining connectivity projects, and political frustration with Western partners and hedging behaviour among Arab states partners to gain a foothold in Europe’s immediate neighbourhood.
