Morocco’s Role in Fostering Euro-Mediterranean Energy Cooperation
Energy cooperation features as one of the key issues at stake in the framework of today’s Euro-Mediterranean relations. In light of the significant geo-political changes taking place at the global and regional levels, the need to investigate Europe’s energy security against the backdrop of its troubled relations with its Southern Neighbourhood becomes paramount. The IAI team contributed to this reflection by organising an international seminar on ‘Morocco’s Role in Fostering Euro-Mediterranean Energy Cooperation’ in cooperation with the OCP Policy Center in Rabat, in the framework of their three-year strategic partnership on Mediterranean issues. The seminar, held in Rabat on 26 September 2014, shed light on the added value that an increased cooperation with the Mediterranean partners, and Morocco in particular, could bring to future European energy security. Two papers, on ‘European Energy Security Challenges and Global Energy Trends: Old Wine in New Bottles?’ and ‘Morocco’s Energy Transition: Achievements and Potential’ respectively, were presented and discussed during the meeting, which was attended by around 30 among key experts, stakeholders from the private sector and local and European authorities.
