Moving forward the EU-India Security Dialogue: Traditional and emerging issues

IAI, in partnership with Gateway House: Indian Council on Global Relations (GH) - one of India's leading think tanks on international affairs, won one of the three tenders of the EU-India Think Tanks Twinning Initiative for the year 2016 funded by the European Union.

With the title: 'Moving forward the EU-India Security Dialogue: Traditional and emerging issues', our project addressed the security dimension of EU-India relations. It focused, in particular, on the following subjects:
1. Maritime security and freedom of navigation;
2. Cyber-security and data-protection;
3. Space policy and satellite navigation cooperation;
4. EU-India industrial defence cooperation;
5. The challenges ahead in India-EU relations.

These research areas were selected for their potential to promote overarching reflections between the two thinks tanks, with the goal to inform and advise policy-makers on practical ways to move the EU-India Security Dialogue forward.

The project run from June to December 2016. It included a mix of research work and exchanges, as well as opportunities for experts’ debates at the roundtable discussions held in Mumbai and Rome and the final presentation in Brussels. More practically, the GH’s and the IAI’s research teams involved in the project conducted research on the topics autonomously and subsequently exchanged papers, giving their respective views on each, thus carrying out overarching reflection and dialogue.

The research findings were first presented at a roundtable expert discussion and networking dinner in Mumbai on 7 November and subsequently at a seminar and networking lunch in Rome on 21 November. The papers, along with the Mumbai’s and Rome’s debates, informed the joint final report which was presented to policy makers in Brussels on 9 December. In June 2017, a book containing all the project papers was published.
