The prominence of the transatlantic alliance in the security of Europe

Course Overview

The outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine and the recent crises in the nearby Middle East have brought the role of NATO back into the center of international debate, concerning its capacity development, military requirements, and deployments, particularly on the eastern and northern flanks. Looking towards 2030, the Atlantic Alliance must consider the need to redefine its priorities, both in terms of intervention areas and strategic issues, to address a range of new threats requiring strategic vision and compromise among its members. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of NATO, the Istituto Affari Internazionali organizes the NATO Spring School, with the support of the United States Embassy in Rome.

What You Will Learn

The course (delivered entirely in English) aims, through an intensive and interactive formula, to critically analyze current and future security challenges for the transatlantic Alliance, deepen knowledge of NATO as an actor in international security, and at the same time, provide participants with the opportunity to enhance their presentation, discussion, and negotiation skills.

Target audience

The course is intended for young students, recent graduates, and professionals with a background in social sciences (Political Science, Economics, Law) with a specific interest in political and strategic dynamics and the intention to strengthen their education on security and defense issues. Assistance and tutoring are provided to participants throughout the course.

The format

The course will be conducted in a hybrid mode. In the initial phase (between February and March), preparatory lessons (totaling 7.5 hours) will be held online, leading up to the second phase, which will take place on April 10-11-12, 2024. During these days, selected students can participate in a role-play simulation on the workings of the North Atlantic Council (NAC), in person at IAI.

The course, limited to a maximum of 30 participants, is free of charge thanks to the support of the American Embassy in Rome. Participation in the school is reserved for those who have successfully passed a selection process.
