EU: Italy is lonelier than ever
In no small part as a result of the government’s posture on the EU, Italy appears to be more isolated than ever in Europe. In the run-up to the May European elections, Rome seems to be lacking both in negotiating leverage and credible strategies of alliance building, while populist and anti-EU forces are leading the polls. However, following troubled weeks with France, a window of opportunity may emerge for a more comprehensive approach to the bilateral relationship and a wide range of dossiers.
