NATO towards 2030
Over 2020 IAI has collaborated with Aspen Institute Italia on the project “NATO towards 2030”. It aimed at reflecting on the future evolution of the Atlantic Alliance, in light of both the international security environment and the domestic politics of NATO members – in primis the US. In doing so, the project contributed to the broader reflection activated in Europe and North America by the NATO2030 process and the related Reflection Group.
The project resulted in two digital events and two papers. The first webinar, The Future of NATO, was held on 8th October 2020 and featured the participation of NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, alongside with a number of representatives from Italian institutions, experts and practitioners from Europe, North America and Turkey. The first paper - NATO's Future: Euro-Atlantic Alliance in a Peacetime War - stimulated the online debate.
The second event has been held on 25th November 2020, and focused on “The new American Administration and Transatlantic Relations: a renewed NATO?”. About one hundred participants joined the webinar. The second paper - NATO towards 2030: a resilient Alliance and its main priorities - was presented and discussed in that occasion.
Both events have been jointly organized by Aspen Institute Italia and IAI, in partnership with the Real Istituto Elcano and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The second webinar was also supported by the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.
