Space, Sovereignty and European Security. Building European capabilities in an advanced institutional framework

This study, realized for the European Parliament, aims at identifying a number of strategies to strengthen the European role in the space field. In this context, the first section is devoted to describe the necessary space capabilities to safeguard European sovereignty and the autonomous utilization of space for security purposes. The second section analyzes the current institutional European framework, which defines the main guidelines regarding space and security. The parallel analysis of these two elements permits to outline a number of challenges for the EU at technological/industrial and political/institutional level. Finally, this study provides some policy recommendations to the European Parliament to deal with such future challenges.
