The return of a clear right-left divide in Italy. An analysis of the EU elections 2024

The elections for the European Parliament on 8 and 9 June in Italy largely confirmed the political balance of forces established during the October 2022 general election and strengthened the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. On the contrary, the vote was a crushing defeat for Matteo Salvini’s League (member of the rival far-right Identity and Democracy group in the EP), which in 2019 had come top with 34% of the votes. In June it got only 9% of the votes, gaining 8 seats. The elections also signalled a return to a more traditional left-right cleavage within the political system, with opposition parties on the centre-left faring better than predicted by opinion polls.
