Italian-German Strategic Dialogue

2022 - current

The Italian-German Strategic Dialogue (IGSD) is the continuation of the Italian-German Strategic Forum, organized by the IAI since 2016 on an almost annual basis. From the outset, the aim of the initiative has been to intensify relations between Italy and Germany by promoting a honest exchange on current issues between political exponents, stakeholders belonging to the private sector, scholars, public administration officials and think-tank researchers from the two countries. The Strategic Dialogue is the result of the collaboration between Hanns Seidel Stiftung (HSS), co-financier of the initiative, the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). The project is further realized in strategic partnership with the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.
The first edition of the Dialogue took place on 30 November 2022 in Rome, and featured the participation of Deputy Minister Valentino Valentini, the German Ambassador to Italy Viktor Elbling and various representatives from the academic and business worlds. The second edition took place in Berlino on 26 January 2024, a few months after the signature of the ambitious German-Italian Action Plan of November 2023, and the debate addressed the topics of Italian-German economic security in the European dimension, and the latest developments in defence cooperation between the two countries.
