European elections 2024

2024 - current

The elections for the European Parliament are a milestone for the future of the European Union. It is a moment of democratic legitimacy for the EU as European citizens are called upon to vote directly for their representatives who will sit in the Parliament. The European Parliamentary Assembly now plays a central role in EU decision-making, actively participating in the adoption of new legislation on many key topics such as migration and ecological transition. What's more, the 2024 vote takes on even greater significance, as these are the first continental elections following a number of systemic shocks that have profoundly altered the European political, economic, and social framework and inspired unprecedented joint responses, such as the pandemic and Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The new composition of the Parliament will have a significant impact on the development of European policies, but also on the institutional structure of the EU, starting with the new European Commission. IAI is therefore dedicating a series of analyses to this important political appointment, developing several lines of research to delve into the main dynamics that characterize the vote, the implications for member states-with a particular focus on Italy and its role in the EU, and the future consequences for European institutions. The goal of the different initiatives is to understand how the vote will affect the EU and its citizens in the coming years by engaging with political representatives and experts.
